Wölffer cider is the cult dry rosé cider from Wölffer Estate, the Long Island winery in Sagaponack — officially their No. 139, named for the estate’s address at 139 Sagg Road. The Wölffer family started making it as a nod to the sparkling apple ‘wine’ their winemaker once pressed from the property’s few apple trees, and it carries that same wine-lover’s sensibility into a can.
It’s made from a blend of New York State dessert apples, with just a dash of natural extract to give it that pretty blush-pink hue and balance the sweetness. Despite the rosé color, this is a dry cider: crisp and fruit-driven, with aromas of fresh apple and elegant yeasty notes, and a palate that drinks like a fruit salad of Granny Smith apple and purple grape. It’s an easygoing 6.9% ABV and naturally gluten-free.
Serve it well chilled, ideally in a wine glass so the aromas can open up. It’s a natural with light salads, seafood, and a charcuterie board — or simply on its own as the rosé drinker’s answer to a warm afternoon.
